President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has questioned the claims of former U.S.
President Donald Trump regarding the rapid resolution of the war in
Ukraine, responding to Trump’s claims that he would end the war within
24 hours of taking office.
“It seems to me that the sole desire to bring the war to an end is beautiful,” Zelenskyy said, “but this desire should be based on some real-life experience.”
“Well, it looks as if Donald Trump had already these 24 hours once in his time. We were at war, not a full-scale war, but we were at war, and as I assume, he had that time at his disposal, but he must have had some other priorities.”
Zelenskyy is referring to conflicts with Russia in Crimea and the
Donbas, both de jure Ukrainian territories.
Nonetheless, Russia has
occupied Crimea since 2014 and throughout the entire duration of Trump’s
presidential term, and Russian-backed separatists have waged war
against the Ukrainian government in Donetsk and Luhansk during the same
period.
The Ukrainian leader highlighted that he desired for the war to end as quickly as possible regardless of whether the U.S. administration remains the same or changes. He gave credit to President Biden, asserting that he has been more supportive during the full-scale war compared to Trump.
Trump’s assertions about the war in Ukraine have raised eyebrows elsewhere too. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, considered a potential contender for the Republican nomination, deemed Trump’s assertion as an exaggeration while commending the instinct behind the claim.
Zelenskyy
acknowledged the uncertainty around changes in the U.S. administration
and their potential implications for Ukraine, expressing worry about the
situation changing for better or worse.
This acknowledgment, though,
came with an emphasis on the importance of understanding the real-life
experience and complexities of the situation.
Trump, in his recent pronouncements, not only spoke about ending the war
promptly but also refrained from identifying Putin as a war criminal.
His remarks also implied that the United States might be providing
Ukraine with too many weapons.
