The stadholder's letter is an alleged
letter written by prince Bernhard on 24 April 1942 to the German leader
Adolf Hitler.
In that letter, he would have made a proposal to Hitler in
which Bernhard would have wanted to act as Stadholder (City Holder of
the Dutch) of Hitler in the Netherlands if the Germans, in consultation
with the English, would give up the direct occupation of the
Netherlands. This was a serious option in that phase of the Second World
War, and it was in this option that the possible action of the prince
would fit.
