1800s. John D. Rockefeller, the head of the Rockefeller family had just become very rich through extracting oil from the ground. Now he is looking for ways to capitalize his oil, and he comes across the idea of using coal tar – a petroleum derivative – to make substances that affect the human mind, body and nervous system.  These drugs are excellent at masking or stopping symptoms, but overall do not cure the underlying cause of a disease.

William Avery “Devil Bill” Rockefeller was one  of those Rockefellers, the father of John D. Rockefeller, in fact. While the son grew up proving to be the epitome of moral rectitude, the  father developed into a fun-loving snake-oil salesman and an immoral  vagabond who disappeared for long periods of time, frequently going  north to Canada.
 

 “Devil Bill”, along  with everything else, was a bigamist. Posing as William Levingston,  Rockefeller married his first wife, Eliza Davison  September 12, 1813 

Bill and Eliza were the parents of three sons and three daughters:

It took a while but rumours finally began to  circulate about the secret life the senior Rockefeller was living.  Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World offered a reward of $8,000 to  anyone who could dig out the story. No one did, not while “Devil Bill”  was alive.

He died in 1906, in Freeport, Illinois, where he is  buried. His headstone was paid for by his Canadian wife, Margaret Allen.
