On the occasion of Donald Trump’s recent call to transfer Palestinians from Gaza, Prince Turki Al-Faisal wrote a letter to him in The National
*Dear President Trump,*
The Palestinian people are not illegal immigrants to be deported to other lands. The land is their land, and the homes that Israel destroyed are their homes, and they will rebuild them as they did after previous Israeli attacks on them.
Most of the people of Gaza are refugees, expelled from their homes in what is now Israel and the West Bank as a result of previous genocidal Israeli attacks on them in the 1948 and 1967 wars. If they must be removed from Gaza, they must be allowed to return to their homes and their orange and olive groves in Haifa, Jaffa, and other cities and villages from which they fled or were forcibly expelled by the Israelis.
Mr. President,
Many of the tens of thousands of immigrants who came to Palestine from Europe and elsewhere after World War II seized Palestinian homes and lands, terrorized the population, and engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing. Unfortunately, America and the United Kingdom, the victors of the war, stood by and even facilitated the deadly forced evictions of Palestinians from their homes and lands.
The United States and the United Kingdom did not want to receive the victims of Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust, so they contented themselves with sending them to Palestine. In Eight Days at Yalta, author Diana Preston relates a conversation between then-US President Franklin Roosevelt and his Russian counterpart Joseph Stalin. Preston writes: “The conversation turned to the subject of Jewish homelands. Roosevelt said he was a Zionist… When Stalin asked Roosevelt what gift he planned to give to the Saudi King Ibn Saud, he replied that he might only be prepared to give him six million Jews…”
Fortunately, when Roosevelt met with Ibn Saud, the king made clear his rejection of the offer, and suggested that the Jews be offered the best land in Germany as compensation for the Holocaust. Unfortunately, Roosevelt’s successor, Harry Truman, fully supported Jewish immigration to Palestine and was instrumental in the creation of Israel.
Mr. President,
The violence and bloodshed we are witnessing today are the result of this act, as well as of the earlier British complicity in Zionist ambitions from 1917 until then.
Your stated intention to bring peace to Palestine is greatly appreciated in our region. I respectfully suggest to you that the way to achieve this is to grant the Palestinians their inalienable right to self-determination and to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, as stipulated in UN General Assembly Resolutions 181 and 194, Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
All Arab and Muslim states, as well as the Palestinian Authority, accept the terms of the Arab Peace Initiative to end hostilities and establish relations with Israel. 149 countries recognize the Palestinian state. Please make your country the 150th. There will be no peace in the Middle East without addressing this noble cause with justice and fairness.
Be the president who will be remembered as a peacemaker.
Turki Al-Faisal
