Igor Spassky, Renowned Russian Submarine Designer, Dies at 98
Igor
Dmitriyevich Spassky, a legendary Russian engineer and former CEO of
the Rubin Design Bureau, passed away at 98 on September 3, 2024.
Spassky
was the chief designer behind several of Russia's most advanced
submarines, including the Delta III/IV and Typhoon-class nuclear
ballistic missile submarines, the Borei-class strategic submarines, and
the Oscar I/II nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines. He also played
a crucial role in the development of the Kilo-class and Improved Kilo
(Varshavyanka-class) diesel-electric submarines.
Throughout his
career, more than 187 submarines were built based on Spassky's designs,
with the Kilo-class submarines becoming particularly successful, serving
in the navies of eight countries. His contributions have left a lasting
legacy in naval engineering.
